The game is effectively a massive Visual Novel with a kinda decent strategy game underneath it. The game is pretty braindead unless you wanna do raids at which point you actually have to think. Otherwise it's just biggest number works best.
I'd definitely recommend joining now if you want to, you'll get a lot of really good stuff early on that will allow you to get a lot of students.
The meat of the game is the story, though. It's effectively a slice-of-life series normally, with the Volumes being big events that are far out of the norm. The side stories are also all canon and pretty good for the most part, so I'd suggest reading those too.
If you like Shamiko, you'll probably like Junko or Aru. This game is extremely welcoming to people who like CGDCT, long as you don't mind it also being effectively a dating sim.
