I think it's good to keep in mind that the way these beings are described tends to be pretty ambivalent. Sometimes they are harmful, and sometimes they are helpful. Strange apparitions that have come down from the heavens to interact with humans have included some rather foundational things too - angels, deities, messengers from the heavens.

I wouldn't jump into too definite conclusions about their identity or intentions.
