Or maybe life is very rare, or multicellular life, or intelligent life, or intelligent life with hands and fire and trees and shit, or we're just the first, or there are aliens but the lives of our civilizations are separated by millions of years, or we just aren't looking hard or far enough, or we aren't actually intelligent enough, so on and so forth. There's a million possible reasons, none of which you can definitively point to.
