This is true.
They drive cars as if they were bicycles. People are first gen car drivers, after all, and 20-somethings drive Xiaomi Su7 EVs with 200hp and crash all the time. It takes decades to accustom people that cars arent toys and that even if you can buy a car as cheap as a new smartphone, it isnt the same.

>Absolutely. I preferred dealing with the Japanese though. I'd take societal pressure over state pressure any day. One can go against the society if in a pinch. Going against the state has worse ramifications.

For me was other way around lol.
In Japan I felt suffocated because everyone judged how I dressed, breathed, walked and spoke. Like I had a Stasi neighbor whispering everytime I didnt behave like some autistic wuzz who apologized for everything, even for existing and taking away space and breathing their air.
In China, I could be as racist and anti-semetic as I wanted to be, talking loudly about how all jews and niggers are vermin and drank lots of beer and baijiu with friends while sitting outside at 2AM eating noodles and skewers at a night market. I could also smoke whenever I wanted and not just at some walled corner like in Japan, and just call a Didi to get my drunk ass home whenever I wanted. Literally felt more free than in Germany, where you can get arrested for anti-semetic internet posts nowadays.
It was really liberating in some way and that's ironic since China is the undemocratic place lmao.
