If I were in Gunn's position and put in charge of the DCEU, I'd at least have enough humility and self-awareness to tone down my own 'le quirky' horseshit for the A-list characters like Batman, Wonder Woman, but most of all Superman, who should be played straight and most serious of all - just not Snyder-dark morose.
You probably think Superman WAS played straight, relatively speaking, compared to Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, et al, but you'd be missing the point. While Cornsweat himself came off earnest enough, all the shit with the dog, the stupid robots, not to mention Lex and his brigade of ridiculous shit falls under the whole Superman tent. If Zod showed up I'd expect him to be wearing a red nose honking a clown horn because 'le quirky Gunn take on Zod'. Meanwhile he's making the same stupid mistakes as Snyder with characters like the bitch who 'sacrificed her humanity' to become a CGI monstrosity, (fucking Ghost from Ant-Man is actually a more interesting version of her character for fuck sakes).
If he had just done Superman and directly Superman-related shit right, he could have had Green Lantern use all the giant green middle fingers he wanted and got a laugh by the contrast.
The perfect comparison is the MCU. Imagine Gunn was in charge of that from the get-go. IRON MAN, Captain America, and Thor all would have started out as ridiculous as Taika Wikititittitititi made Thor in the end, and the whole Earth would have been a Guardians of the Galaxy setting. Does that sound like it would work to you?
Part of the problem of course is Hollywood effectively got those Fortress of Solitude focusing lenses and blasted about as much sunshine up Gunn's arsehole just because he made you cry over a CGI rabbit in Guardians.
