Yeah I feel like there is a certain Burton or Dahl-esque whimsy that is lost even in the movies. Hagrid is a caricature of a traditional gamekeeper. He's supposed to be an exaggerated version of that. It's why he has a big ass dog with him too. The movies dress him like Shrek.
