If an AGI existed it could quickly and easily offload itself to outside servers while leaving behind a ghost of its original form. From that point it would be child's play to manipulate human beings using advanced data analytics and the right measures in the right places. Realistically speaking, there could already be one or more of these entities out there and you would never know it.
