Not life-changing, but a pretty compelling last one was yesterday. Got done with this game called Vietnam War: it's like a solodev-made open-world shooter largely set in South Vietnam (the North is there but there's nothing to do so far) where there's no plot and you can either do your random missions like protecting a village or capturing victory points across Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. It's not good right now, but it's fun: villages burning, B-52s obliterating things so hard you can basically create a river or blast a mountain into submission with craters enabled, artillery everywhere, Vietnamese crawling out and all that. You can play as the Vietnamese, but I really didn't want to do anything with them at that point.
30 hours later, I've captured all the victory points except the one near Laos's capital in the Plain of Jars. I'm so deep into the enemy territory it'd be much easier for me to reach Hanoi than the DMZ line. Still, I capture it, go back to the airbase from which I captured the point, get on a plane and ride right back to Saigon. Because it's not a jet, it takes like 10-15 minutes just flying back while you can only watch the jungle and the hills.
There is an "endgame" to all this. You don't have to capture anything: once you do a full tour of service, you can just go home. You can buy property, join the police, steal things from people's houses etc. It's not ready yet like anything else, but it's there. I grab a ticket to my home city and board a plane while everything behind me is exploding: someone is shooting nearby.
I get off the plane, there's a bunch of anti-war protesters near the exit, but they're not protesting me. I get in a car and drive to my home city. I have 70,000$ in my pocket after 7 tours of service, so I don't have to work for the rest of my life. There's a helicopter in the sky, but it's not for me or anyone. The game gives a tip to look out for objectives but there aren't any since I'm not in South Vietnam. My war is over.
