Being a high status woman back in the day was terrible in general. Like 80% oh historical "oppression" tropes come from the norm on treating princesses and other noble women. Arranged marriages? Mostly for nobles. Pedophillia? Only in nobles was it seen as acceptable. Seeing woman as helpless cattle? Mostly nobles for whom women were just birthing resource not a helper in hard work. Beauty standards? Only nobles cared, a peasant woman was valued for strength and resilience first and foremost. Beatings? As a peasant woman you could complain on that in court even then, but that did not apply to noble women, because it was a disgrace and your husband was officially more important than you. As a noble woman all your transgressions against the norm were also extremely public and immediately noticed, but as a peasant you could sneak away to do your own thing, brew beer, foam up butter, open a brothel...Even become an artisan if you are really stubborn. No one truly cares. Also as a peasantry you would aquire actual life skills and wouldnt be in a tight pitch if your husband died.
