Sonic is the thesis.
Knuckles is the antithesis.
Sonic is the wind, Knuckles is the mountain.
"The Wind" is the thesis statement of the franchise. "The Mountain" is the anti-thesis. The counter-argument.
Knuckles exists to be the counter argument against Sonic. If "The Wind" is the ideal, then "The Mountain" critics that ideal by pointing out all the reasons why it shouldn't work. If Sonic is the moral paragon, then Knuckles has to also be a moral paragon in a sense, or have that level of authority to challenge Sonic's own moral standing. Everyone that argues against the wind, that doesn't like this aspect of Sonic and tries to change it, that is how Knuckles should be characterized. The opposition against Sonic's perspective.

Canonically, they are Friendly RIVALS. Fighting Buddies. They are, and always will be, RIVALS. The kind of best bros that never get along, and never will, even when they have each other's back as friends on the same team hanging out in the same group. That will NEVER be Sonic & Shadow, that will ALWAYS be Sonic & Knuckles.
