It probably would have been worse story-wise considering Monty wanted to have the Fall of Beacon and Pyrrha's death even earlier, and Monty considered Miles and Kerry friends and defended their writing on Twitter.
That said he was good enough at animating the show would probably be more watchable by virtue of that.
While RWBY might not have gotten as mainstream I think if Monty stayed as head of animation at RT, the company would probably still exist. RWBY was his passion project and was fairly successful despite its flaws, so I doubt he'd have approved Gen:Lock, the failure of which company never really recovered from.
