Depends. On a lower resolution screen, sprites make sense, especially since such a device would likely struggle to process 3D models more than sprites. You can also see the sprite pixels more clearly, which adds to their visual appeal. The higher the resolution of your game, the smaller the pixels, the more they resemble drawings, so you have to make bigger pixel art. It just comes off as really labor-intensive if you're trying to capture beautiful visuals, especially if you have to account for animation at 60 fps and different states. It just becomes easier using models with some sort of visual filter, especially if the goal is to replicate the art made for the game. All the battle chip art in-game was just scaled down from real artwork.
