It's nuanced either way, but I really think this is genuinely the best way they could possibly go about it.
There is DEFINITELY a whale and tryhard community in this game that constantly clamors for hard content or something to make themselves feel good for putting this much effort and money into the game. Abyss speedrunning was the only outlet they had, but then IT released as the ultimate casual endgame mode which also redirected so much attention away from Abyss.
And the reason why they pamper casualfags so much is because the ENTIRE GAME is designed for casual gameplay. The entire game's philosophy is casual fun. Most of the playerbase is casual, and I'd wager most of the anons here are casualfags too because they aren't willing to put more effort than the bare minimum needed to claim all the rewards available.
This method gives the best to both worlds. Tryhard whales get an exclusive trophy, JUST for them. Keeping this trophy up means constantly keeping up with the meta and rotations. More casual tryhards that don't have the money to whale can cope with the shittier version of the trophy, while still feeling good. And those that don't tryhard can just co-op for the gems and have a good time with friends without a single concern for the special trophy, with these users being able to rest easy knowing they'll always be able to get it next time, if they ever want to.
