It sure was. God might or might not be real, I don't know and don't care, but the belief in something greater than ourselves allowed humans to cope with living in such a large and connected society in the first place. We literally weren't built for it, you can dissect a simian's brain and determine how big their social circle can be and for a human it's about a few hundred people. God (or whatever you believe in) allowed us to bridge that gap. If you hurt someone you don't know, you didn't just hurt a human being, you also hurt God.

I find it notable that society has only gotten more divided ever since the west has become secular, giving all the whining about how evil religion and (western) religious people are. It was ripe for abuse, but religion filled a hole in people that modern society can't. We don't know our neighbors, we shun our peers and we scoff at nationality. Is it any wonder consumerism is on the rise?

Also Deus Ex is a fucking great game and I need to finish my playthrough.
