The truth was that the Titanic was actually well built for her time. The best steel they could produce was used, the safety standards were above the norms required at the time by carrying more boats than mandated and was crewed by fairly competent sailors, technicians and officers. Many died at their stations doing everything they could with the electricians doing anything to keep the lights on as long as possible as an example.

The real tragedy is that the ship struck the iceberg in the worst way imaginable; a full glancing blow, tearing up the hull over a significant distance. A lesser glancing blow or a head-on collision would've meant she was going to stay afloat and limp into New York's harbour.
