“Ailell has been in a ruinous state for ages, however, Merceus turned into one more recently. It used to be one of the old Empire’s strongholds. During the Unification War, it was suddenly wiped off the map by what was described as a beam of light falling from the sky. Even now, 25 years later, no life grows there. The official story from the Church was that, once again, the Goddess had been provoked. That she’d been angered by the countless lives lost due to the ongoing war. In truth, both Ailell and Merceus were the targets of ancient Agarthan weapons that were known as the ‘ICBM.’”
>“Eye See Bee Em?” You furrow your brow in your confusion. “Bronte, what the hell are you talking about?”
“That is what the weapons were referred to in the writings left behind by Xenophanes.” Bronte says urgently. “They are the worst combination of both magic and technology. Used thousands of years ago by the desperate Agarthans in their war against the Goddess. The ICBM that hit Merceus was launched by the Agarthans on Fodlan who’d been forced underground. The result of the blast could be felt even by the most powerful sorcerers here, many miles away. When the Sages and the former King learned of the ICBM launch, they were able to trace it to its source, and they uncovered the location of the underground city, Shambhala. They believed the old Agarthans were on the brink of extinction, and they were correct. Shambhala was destroyed, and the United Kingdom of Fodlan was born soon after. The threat of the ICBMs was seemingly gone for good.”
You burst out laughing, doubling over on the couch and grabbing your ribs. You laugh so hard that you are almost on the verge of tears. Bronte waits for you to finish, which to her, seems an eternity. After wiping your eyes with your cloak, you are finally able to muster up the will to say something.
>“Bronte…you realize how this all sounds, right? I mean…if your mother could hear you now, she’d drag you out of this land on the back of her pegasus herself.”
“You don’t think I know that?” Bronte asks, bitterly. “Don’t you know how badly I wish I could tell her? To confide in her and hear her counsel? Even if by some miracle I was able to send her a letter that was not intercepted, she’d think I’d gone insane. Who would believe a story as preposterous as this?”
>“Certainly not those old-timers.”
“Exactly. So do not mock me, Tristain. Please.”
>“Right, sorry. So back to Tartarus. What do you think is inside?”
Bronte takes a moment to compose herself before continuing. “When Xenophanes came to this land, he brought with him ICBMs. The idea was he’d use them against the Nabateans if they came for him, or possibly against Shambhala, who would have viewed him as a traitor and deserter. The only problem is, they’ve never been found.”
