I would argue that 6DOF shooters present more of an intellectual filter than tank controls, which at the end of the day are 1.5D at most (forwards, backwards, turn left or right)
Being able to navigate and visualize a 3D space, move not only forwards and back but left and right AND up and down, as well as rolling to change what "up and down" are, is the real test.
