We are becoming, and arguably are, a nation of absentee landlordism. I drive through my town and what do I see? Walmart. CVS. Olive Garden. McDonalds. Best Buy. Nobody here owns these businesses. Nobody here controls what they sell, or how much they pay. Same thing with the banks. And with our hospitals and urgent cares. And now most of the gas stations. I drive by empty commercial properties with weather-beaten "For rent" signs on them- Nobody here owns these buildings, and nobody here can afford them. I drive by swaths of affordable housing apartment complexes- Nobody here owns them. The landlords don't even live in my city. I drive to the more rural area, and I see Dollar General. Family Dollar. Shell stations. The neighborhoods have more and more homes with 6 or more cars parked outside of them- that means multiple adults or families living in them. That means they're renting them. The chicken plants nearby? Owned by Tyson, or Koch. They won't even hire locals anymore- they import immigrants to pay them less. The same thing goes for the farmland- nobody here owns any of it.
