To "Asians", which I presume you mainly mean Japan, anime is just a form of media.
In general some sub-cultures from ethnicity to nationality to media/franchise fandoms are different. In USA especially it seems that anime is considered more "left-leaning" hobby these days due to cartoony appearance, "tranime" yelling some do from right-wing, and the fact that it is foreign media. These days especially the latter point seems to be a huge thing due to Trump wanting domestic industry to be a focus and heard from murican friend that some right-wing people don't really view Asians much differently from each other. China, Japan, Korea, Indonesia. It's all the same to them. Just like they see "Europe" as one cultural place because USA is one country.

So all in all, anime in west, but especially in USA, has become a hobby more left-leaning people who are okay with media and culture of "lesser countries". Left-leaning people have trans people, and when you constantly think about trans-people and go seek for them, you find them.
15 years ago people would've laughed their asses off at "headpat is trans dogwhistle", but we have people calling DK whistling a cuckold/soi behavior, pinching gesture is feminist symbol, and that walking is woke.
