Or maybe feathered pattern were 0.1% more difficult to see coming by prey, so a dozen millions years of natural selection later you have feather and there's still no reason to shed them.

We have rather big flightless bird today, and we know of the extinctions events that killed all the huge species. And once you lose size, the only thing remaining is speed & flight.
So there's no reason to dismiss the possibility of big feathered dinosaur, hunting prey as would a wolf, except instead of fur, it has feathers
