Before YouTube, there were websites that allowed people download and share fragmovies, machinima, etc. The two I used most were DemoHQ.com and own3d.tv, but there was also Own-Age.com, FraggedNation, and Filefront. It's hard to really overestimate the scope of just how much gaming history has been lost when sites like that went down, not to mention all the random mods and maps people would make.
Speaking of which, the loss of Photobucket, ImageShack, and other early image-hosting sites that people relied on to put images on forums, or just keep digital records of their pics, has decimated much of the traces of what the early Internet was like.
I could go in-depth as to why, but take my word for it that people were immensely HAPPIER online relative to now as well. Yes, there was flaming, but it was different, and more laidback and fun for everyone involved. Hard to explain the nuances, it was just better.
