Have him get blasted with the infinity canon WHILE ALSO getting emotionally and psychologically annihilated due to the fact that the reason he's getting blasted is because he's doing something wrong. Then, when he's at 0.00000000000001% HP, have him realize the flaw in his nature and stand above all others by facing the one challenge that's greater than all: Change.
To realize his shortcomings, shortcomings not related to some superficial character flaws, but entrenched deep within his psyche. Horrid monuments built from cement in his mind, that have had years and years to harden. THOSE are strong. Stronger than any giant Egg mech, stronger than any mystical gem, stronger than any ancient deity, they put your giant laser beam to shame.
"I'm not wrong, right?" He'll ask. "I'm not a bad person!" He'll scream. "I-I just want to help everyone! I didn't do anything wrong!", he'll tell himself. Because the monument is too great, too overwhelming. And then, he'll say "Oh... It IS my fault..." and his whole world will crumble. All this time, the path he has been walking on has led to this dead end.
How can he beat it? It's all he's ever known, it's his nature, it's who he is. It's Sonic. And then, at his lowest low, at his deepest darkness, he'll find it: Hope. From someone else, or from within himself. Hope that, even if this path has led to a dead end, he can choose another one, prove that he is not simply a mere product of his circumstances, but an agent of change to both himself and others.
And then, after each time he tears those monuments down, he will find the answer, he will find the way to deal with the threat in the real world, because that's a piece of cake now.
THAT... is cool.
You know men have fought wars throughout all history, right? People would rather die and kill than change, and Sonic is still at that level? Pathetic.
