Trying and ambition is one of the things that makes you human, wider-society and the state of the world be damned. When things suck that's when you should try hardest. It's easy to be a doomer about it but you're only denying your indomitable human spirit if you do that. You can and should pursue your interests, no matter how niche or autistic they are, even if it's difficult, because that's what's actually fulfilling. Consumerism isn't stopping people from doing that unless they are hideously prone to distraction.
This is my autistic worldview and I will not compromise on it.

Ask the boomer's parents, or their parents. They lived through a global depression and some of the worst tragedies in human history. Things were objectively much worse for them than they are for us and they still managed to provide an easy life for their kids and put man on the moon six times.

9/10 times complaints are because they didn't like the grade you give, or didn't bend the knee to dumb requests, as opposed to teaching quality. Even better if they submitted a manuscript written by ChatGPT.
There are incentive structures that might push someone to do that but if a student can't put in the effort into their own education and then expects concessions, they shouldn't be given the time of day.
