I think two of the journal entries, chapters 4 and 7, provide a good argument that the Executioner and the painter fused after the former kills himself.

I do really like the resolution of this story. Dark Souls, Souls 3, and Sekiro are all about "be satisfied with what you have"/ let go, let things die. But Executor saying fuck off and beating the game restoring the Erdtree is a genuine happy ending. Quite nice. Ishizaki direct more games.
