I can't see the appeal in visually sterile copypaste at all, doubly so when they're intended to be virtual pets you raise by having to feed and clean up shit but look almost human with accessories and everything.
I'd assume the old character design philosophy in vintage and Plus came from having to work with black and white LCD screens so most characters there had to have a unique silhouette and face, but those limitations bred creativity.
Ironically I don't mind gag characters like Oyajitchi and Bill at all since you have to go out of your way to get them and are treated as rare/joke characters to contrast the rest of the world rather than something unironic and sincere.
