Defensive magic is shown to be able to withstand physical attacks from monsters and a decent amount of punishment from spells that use physical attacks. The main drawback seems to be how much mana it drains, which means Frieren can hold out for quite a while. That's also assuming the 1,000+ year old mage doesn't have anything up her sleeve crazier than "ordinary defensive magic."
