Characters that use their immense talent to be lazy fucks who just barely coast by are fun, relatable, and a free character arc.
A lot of people had (or knew someone that did) that phase at some point in school when they were really good at one subject, slouched off for a few years, then got a rude awakening when they started failing and had to shape up.
Flanderizing these characters into total morons not only makes them less fun but gimps your options for developing them.
