It's not exactly Haruhi but the themes of self-actualization and finding meaning in a lonely world are pretty important in both.

I can see some of those traits in the direction, more subdued of course.

To me NieA_7 is the best fit because one of the key themes of NieA_7 is how the extraordinary becomes the ordinary, and vice-versa. Also the dynamic between Haruhi & Kyon is very similar to that of Mayuko & Niea.
Interesting. I might have to rewatch Lain someday to try and make more sense of it too.
