Thankfully its a pretty minor gripe. For a game I've put this much time into and that being the only genuine issue so far, thats not bad at all. Its also one of those games where I was 12 hours in, finished disc 1, and felt like I had only just started.

So was there an actual way to figure out the correct path to save them or was it trial and error?

It's funny, there was a chapter in some old .hack mangas that tackled a very similar issue. Looks like that mangaka was trying to impart some gamer wisdom about how to get the most out of your games.
