I'm sorry if my absence caused some concern. I was traveling a lot and when I settled it was in places where the network was rangebanned.
My journey is nearing it's end, and since the last post I have been to Koyasan and Kyoto. Koyasan was really unique, and Kyoto had a very different feeling to it compared to other big cities. Beyond the core and the big landmarks, some places felt more like Nikko or Suwa than suburbs of a big city. I've also been sick, but I'm recovering. I've had some pretty interesting experiences and learned some new things. I'll get to them more in detail later.
The plan is depending on how healthy I am to go to Ise either tomorrow or the day after.
One thing I do have to say, that besides some really popular types like tanuki and kitsune and kappa, various youkai aren't very present in the traditional or popular culture at large. I don't really remember for example seeing much any youkai-themed art in any of the museums I've visited so far. This is a bit unexpected, as the tales of monsters and ghosts have been a pretty big part of Japanese culture. I guess in some sense some of them passed into margins of the culture.
Some youkai are also 100% definitively thought to have both male and female manifestations. I've seen sculptures of both kappa and tanuki with tits. So big tit Nitori is just a manifestation of an old cultural trend.

Interesting, do link it again. I guess it ges to show that people indeed have attitudes like these.

They have a lot of oomph probably because the Suwa sect is not quite as forgotten as them "passing into fantasy" would imply. I found it deeply fascinating how the Shika no Kuni documentary has spawned fanart of the people (mostly the boys) involved in the reconstructed ritual. The Suwa kami has completed another reincarnation cycle.

Oh, interesting, so you have a Kannon ofuda? She's the honzon of that temple, if I remember correctly?
I do agree that they are self selecting. Shrines with English explanations of talismans and such don't tend to have English explanations of the ofuda, so it also has that layer.
I guess I was nervous about them being restricted because there are aspects of Japanese society that are pretty inaccessible to foreigners. I've never received any resistance, it's either been purely transactional or then the person behind the counter was positively curious.
Besides the ofuda, I now have the Shingon Ajikan "A"-symbol on a portable wooden board. It's a representation of Dainichi Nyorai they use for meditation.
