USS Nimitz was to be decommissioned this year. In April she was sent to sea for an unscheduled additional deployment, with decommissioning to take place next year.
A fifty years old, worn out warship with nearly spent reators that will cost as much to dismantle as she did to build would make an excellent sacrifice to justify total war, just like the obsolete battleships left at Pearl Harbor in 1941 while the modern carriers (with their CAP that could have spotted the Japs) were withdrawn to the mainland ports.
