I have been listening to a monk who grew up in Communist Yugoslavia, Belgrade (Serbia). The Beatles had basically culturally infected the entire city with new age far eastern spirituality and he got into 80's rock and hindubuddhism at the same time. It took travelling to New York, seeing the decay of society (this was the 90's no less, imagine what he'd see now) and finally returning to the Orthodox Church by going to the parish in Brooklyn that was founded by Saint Raphael. Now he's an abbot of a monastery back home in Serbia. He spent some time at Saint Tikhon's monastery in Pennsylvania though. picrelated
