(start of part 3) The film ends with Joshua, Miles, Theodore and Amy having saved the world by defeating Robotnik once and for all. Then two employees from Sega of Japan, Yuji Naka (played by Yuji Naka himself) and Naoto Ohshima (played by Naoto Ohshima himself), visit Joshua and his friends in the United States of America and offer to create a video game series in honour of Joshua's heroic deed of saving the world. Joshua agrees but only if Miles, Theodore and Amy are also a part of the video game series. Naka and Ohshima agree to this condition and create the concept of the 'fursona' for the Sonic The Hedgehog video game series by depicting Joshua in the aforementioned video game series not as a human nicknamed 'Sonic The Hedgehog' but as a literal hedgehog, albeit a hedgehog that is anthropomorphic and blue. The first Sonic game is then released one year later in 1991, with 'Tails' debuting in Sonic 2 in 1992 as an anthropomorphic fox, Amy debuting in Sonic CD in 1993 as an anthropomorphic female hedgehog and 'Knuckles' debuting in Sonic 3 & Knuckles in 1994 as an anthropomorphic echidna.
