basically from birth people are psychologically traumatized into seeing themselves as separate distinct identities from nature, and everyone around them, not being able anymore to see the whole where they are not separate from it. so they go through their whole life more concerned with self preservation than beneficial custodianship of the whole including everyone and everything in it.
