Speaking for myself only: Phainon was mostly an observer the entire time. His "wank" made sense as the entire world is just AI programmed to groom him into becoming LR. The truth was that none of it was real basically. All that "love" for him never existed. It was just to groom him. He was nothing but a stepping stool both for Destruction and Cyrene basically.
He also doesn't solve everything. He just makes a last stand, going out at least with a bang while at it.

Meanwhile, Neuvillette completely hogs everything from other characters and makes it about himself and his epic saga, while resolving everything with his power up.
