Traditional color models had no white or black until Goethe's theory of color from 1810. Which states them as sources of color but not colors on their own right. Before our modern understanding of light waves most color models lacked the color white black or grey. This was due to the fragmentation of light through a prism, which only produced chromatic colors. The general consensus was that the perception of light and dark was not color itself but shades of light.

I personally agree with these model's. Pure black, white and grey are achromatic, which means do not contain a hue. I would say a black and white image is "without color" wouldn't you?
