The same that happens everywhere with prosperity, corruption and geopolitical movements from other countries, also the many countries created after the fragmentation of the Spanish Empire were never meant to be successful just to be easily exploitable for others but this is something that many liberators learnt too late, that's why instead of having 4 mega countries there are 19 republics.
My dear General:
I have received your most esteemed letter of September 20. The arrival of Colonel Wright has given me the greatest satisfaction, both for the news of your health and for the interest you take in my fate.
America is ungovernable for us. He who serves a revolution plows the sea. This country will inevitably fall into the hands of the unrestrained mob, only to pass afterward under the dominion of petty tyrants—almost imperceptible—of all colors and races. Devoured by every crime and extinguished by ferocity, the Europeans will not deign to conquer us. If it were possible for any part of the world to revert to primitive chaos, it would be America’s final hour.
I have sweated blood to bring this country forward, and all I have achieved is to secure its independence—at the cost of everything but freedom. All is lost, General, and anarchy leads us to the precipice. I can do no more; let whoever wishes to try, and if they achieve anything, may they enjoy it.
Your ever affectionate servant,
Simón Bolívar
