They started as two separate restaurants, Carl's Jr, on the west coast was opened first, then Hardee's on the East Coast, in the 90s Carl's Jr acquired the Hardee's company and over time changed the menu and sinage to be identical to Carl's Jr while keeping the name so as not to lose the Hardee's customer base.
