Elves are like the Eevee of the fantasy world races. Being biogenetically engineered to adapt to their environment, their body will gradually adapt to whatever surrounding they are currently in. These form what many would call wood elfs, dunes elfs, sea elfs, and such. However they are all the same species, and any low elf can gradually shift between all of these over the course of a life time by spending prolonged time in a new environment.
But when the species was being created, someone hacked into the DNA of a specific batch to only take bio-adaptational preference towards the magic laylines that mysterious wrap around the world. The results of this means that these elves can no longer evolve to their environment, but instead to schools of magic. These can range from the pristine and statue-like Earth Elves to the pale and bony Necro Elves. But due to the deliberate nature of these alterations, it is often quite rare. And the bulk of this species are simply known as high elves, with dark elves being the second most common variation.
