Roman Starovoyt, who was dismissed as Russia's transport minister earlier on Monday, has been found dead at his home in the Moscow region in an apparent suicide, according to multiple Russian media reports. He was 53.
President Vladimir Putin officially dismissed Starovoyt on Monday morning. Hours later, reports emerged that he had been found dead from a gunshot wound at his home in Odintsovo. A firearm was reportedly discovered near his body.
Andrey Kartapolov, head of the State Duma's defense committee, confirmed the death to the news outlet RTVI.
Starovoyt had served as transport minister since May 2024. Before his cabinet appointment, he was the governor of the Kursk region, which borders Ukraine.
Some reports have linked his dismissal to testimony from his successor as Kursk governor, Alexey Smirnov, who was recently arrested on embezzlement charges related to the construction of fortifications in the region.
