This isn't a chicken and the egg thing.
There's literally a larger audience for overseas cartoons because it doesn't pigeonhole an entire medium, and can cater to a wide variety of interests.
There's literally a problem with domestic medium can show because a select few interest groups want to limit what a medium can show.
So as a whole, we DO NOT have a hang up with cartoons being able to tell stories to more than just children. This is why a large amount of cartoons are imported into the US, because our domestic producers can not produce media that the general public wants to watch, due to a small minority of people.
The 80s ended 40 years ago, grandpa, and even kids back in the 90s, noticed how much better cartoons could be when there weren't "parent groups" fucking over our cartoons.
I mean, were you even born when cartoons suffered a huge dive ni quality when TV stations were required to run EDUCATIONAL shit if there were any kids watching their station? I sure as fuck noticed the dive in quality when that happened.
Stuff like pic was a piss poor replacement for Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain and network stations like NBC no longer even showed cartoons, because of those educational requirements.
