It is kinda understandable that they wanted to steer a bit further away from the HL1 influences, I mean they even changed the labcoats from normal labcoats to the hideous ones in picrel.
Also I guess the WH40k aesthetic does sorta fit the "mystic" thing the GK's have going on better than some normal looking grunts.
The path the story and designs started taking around the labs area really made me wish for an ACTUAL HL1 survival game.
