If I were to guess, the tone of this scene was lost in translation so that it turned into a PTSD episode instead of a normal daydream like in the book. Either that or they just decided to spice this scene up, but it's interesting to think about how the Japanese translations of the novels have influenced the impression of certain scenes in Japan.
