I don't think it's a stretch to say the buildings either eft an astral footprint, some mechanism of the brain or mind expects to see them and superimposes an impression or a combination of both.

When my last cat died for many weeks when I came home I'd catch myself subconsciously glancing around at her former sitting spots expecting her to be there.

Those buildings were embedded into media to stir anticipation and excitement around NYC and the mind expects it to be there like a visual phantom limb syndrome.

I went there recently and the skyline still doesn't look normal to me. One WTC leaves nowhere near the visual and emotional impression as the twin towers did even though they were two simple rectangles.

In 2002 they set up 88 spotlights called "The Tribute of Light" (picrel). It ran for a month and then they scaled it back to 9/11 anniversary every year. This continued to sustain the psychic impression especially in those that grew up in the era of the twin towers.
