I'm human, not american.
My hometown was extremely hilly, there were barely any flat areas where I could learn to ride a bike and I wasn't about to walk to the edge of town just to get some flat roads and try and learn, only to have to walk uphill again with the bike afterwards.
On the flip side, all the walking up and downhill made my legs and tights really strong so at least there's that.
