It could have been a hell of a lot worse. Any parent hears from their child "run away from home" and "suicide attempt" and it's straight to the psych ward under suicide watch. If it had been during the winter she could have just dropped dead on the snow. Whoever brought up Mezzo Forte had it right, Irreversible too for another example. She got off with a slap on the wrist all things considered. It's not that bad, she can still claw her way out of this.
