I'm starting to think that they're genetically programmed to do that, like a rat that has been pozzed with toxoplasma is programmed into killing itself on purpose to maximize the spread. Maybe they really are cursed and the "curse" is a genetic mutation that alters their behavior to be like this, and just like a curse they can never avoid it because it is in their genes and their religion is ethnocentric and incentivizes preservation of these corrupted genes.
