Denji is a victim of Part 2's awful writing.
In Part 1? Denji was fucking great. Amazing even. He was a simple dumbass selfish kid who wanted to be loved, yet you get small glimpses of some deeper maturity with him. Despite all the bombastic action, Part 1 was kind of a coming of age story about Denji learning what being a person truly meant. His little brother dynamic with Aki? Him growing to love Power platonically? His earnest yet ill-fated romance with Reze? Beautiful. All of it, beautiful.
And I know thread schizos have this warped idea of Makima, but she worked perfectly as a counterpoint to Denji. She, like Denji, was broken and lonely and latched on to a one-sided "romance" that was never, ever going to work out. Makima "loved" Pochita in the same way Denji "loved" Makima. The only difference between them in that regard is that Denji was kind of self-aware that they were never going to work out.
If Chainsaw Man ended with Part 1? Denji is one of the best shonen protagonists in recent memory. Not because he's "so deep!!!!" or whatever, but because his story felt so earnest despite the weirdly shallow foundation (i.e. "I WANNA HAVE SEGGS!!!) it's built on.
Part 2 Denji though? Take everything I've said and throw it out the fucking window.
I hate Part 2 Denji. Not because he's """evil""" or whatever, but because he's so fucking poorly written.
I don't know what happened to Fujimoto during Part 2's serialization, but he seems to think that a character being sad makes them interesting. Part 2 Denji is a hollow caricature of a person.
>Denji suffers
>Denji cries and feels sad. Almost, and I mean ALMOST, has a moment of self realization.
>"W-W-What???? Is that a booba???? YABBA DABBA DOOOOOO.... wait what were we talking about again?"
It's the same thing again and again and again and again.
I hate Part 2 so much bros. I believe Chainsaw Man Part 2 will be remembered as a shitshow on par with Rise of Skywalker.
