Muhammad became a warlord after he started his prophethood, not before. The people he preached to were mainly Jews, Christians, and other monotheists so that is why Islam has many elements from Judaism, Christianity, and preexisting rituals from traditional Arab paganism. ("pagan" but they were for the most part monotheistic by the time of Muhammad)
Muhammad was described to be an illiterate merchant before his prophethood, so I honestly doubt that he's the perfect candidate for a cult leader. I'd argue that the reason why he was successful was due to his pandering to Jews, Christians, and monotheists in general.
Jesus is likewise similar in the way that he pandered to his Jewish environment. Later those Jewish followers transformed him into what he is now in Christianity, likely again to pander to a growing Jesus movement that could've died in its tracks if somebody didn't claim that he resurrected.
Nothing really magical about either of them.
