One aspect I think is interesting is how it can be multifaceted as variations of inversions of typical familial structures:
The youth who is more mature with an immature mother figure/guardian. There’s aspects of this in Shinji/Misato or KO/Enid.
Black Cat and Black Kitten is a version where the boy transitions from the role of a son to a partner/husband-like figure.
Fisher and Power Girl is the younger and smaller boy conquering his object of desire, a power play if you will.
Jonny Quest/Jezebel Jade represents the younger innocent being guided into adult situations (of multiple kinds).
TLDR: Oedipal COMPLEX.
